Welcome to Palace Green Library

Palace Green Library, in the heart of Durham city, holds Durham University's outstanding special collections and is home to two free galleries that help tell the story of Durham.

Living on the Hills is a permanent exhibition that uses archaeological objects to explore the last 10,000 years of Durham's history and the DLI Collection Gallery acts as an introduction to anyone interested in the history of the Durham Light Infantry, once described by Field-Marshal Montgomery as a 'magnificent regiment'. 

Visitors are also welcome to use the archives and special collections for research. This includes over 70,000 books printed before 1850 including 300 incunables, over 100 Medieval manuscripts,  over 30,000 maps and prints and 100,000 photographs.
